Verbotene Liebe, das Lieblichste/Süßeste (Traube) an der Rebe
(d.h. das Beste, was die Rebe hervorbringt)
Verbotene Liebe, ist (aber) der Wein eines anderen Mannes.
Ein weiser Mann würde daran vorübergehen,
ein törichter Mann würde sie ganz langsam und genüßlich ausschlürfen
aber ein toter Mann, er wird niemals erfahren.

aber mal ernsthaft, mit dem törichten Mann hab ich ein Problem - aus dem Kontext des Liedes heraus. Vincent hat ja in seiner Wut den Verstand ausgeschaltet und sich ne Knarre gekauft, um den Kontrahenten auszuschalten, weil er Maria für sich allein behalten wollte. Ich interpretier das so: Ein weiser Mann weiß halt wo seine Grenzen sind, ein törichter rennt blindlings in sein Unglück.

I totally agree with you, Corinna <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Winken" /> but on the other hand it's very interesting to share the different views people have of the lyrics and it's amazing how different they are indeed.

Even if I think you will be right after all I don´t like your point of view.
But however - a discussion about different views it´s a nice way to fill the summer slack season and it´s much more funny than a school-lesson to train myself in english language. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Winken" />

For those don´t know the song [i:22b0ewwx]Forbidden[/i:22b0ewwx], I give a short break of the song-contents.
(poor) boy loves poor but pretty girl and girl loves boy. rich boy takes poor girl to hold her. But poor boy meets girl furthermore. rich boy finds it out, buys a gun to kill the poor boy. But he shoots down the girl, and than he is horrifyed. poor boy takes the gun and shoots down rich boy.

You see, my problem is to define wise and foolish man. I mean, it´s about love, about heartstrings, which makes brain out of order so often. And it can´t be good to repress one´s feelings or more than that to shut down emotionally.

I think, in this story the rich boy is the foolish man.

First, who is the wise/foolish man? Vincent or the poor guy?

A wise man (from Vincent's point of view) would accept that her heart belongs to another man and that he couldn't win her even with all his money and as a consequence would let her go (as it is obvious that the girl doesn't love him).

If the poor boy is considered the wise man it could mean that he foresees all the troubles arising from his affair with the girl and surrenders.

The definition "foolish man" is even more complicated. For me it is the poor boy who enjoys her slowly although he knows about the imminent consequences.

Wow, interpreting someone else's poetry is really tough. The longer I think it over the more confusing it is.
