I agree with you, the longer I think it over the more confusing it is. Otherwise it seems so clear, but all times just for a moment.

So who is the wise/foolish man? Vincent or the poor guy?
I think Vincent is not a wise but the foolish man. Maria wasn´t his wine. And even though she was gravitated to his wealth, she didn´t love him. And the otherone?
The otherone is the foolish man, ´cause he enjoys his affair with Maria although he knows about the imminent consequences? Well, may be he should foresee all the troubles arising from his continuous affair with Maria. But he and Maria felt in love for each other long before Vincent took her. And then Vincent should see he never could hold her.
It can´t be good to repress one´s feelings or more than that to shut down emotionally.

I learned to hate it, while a year at school with a teacher who never wanted to hear our own ideas <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Weinen" /> . Just of corse proof-reading is a "good piece of craftsmanship" <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt=":twisted:" title="Sehr böse" /> . The next year we got a teacher who was loving to train his students in making themself independent in thinking <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Lachen" /> .
So maybe we´ll never find out, what has been Bruce Guthro´s brainchild while writing his song, I relish to talk about it. <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Winken" />

Just another thought about the "foolish man".
Your approach is interesting and probably you're right but what disturbs me is that the "foolish man" drinks her slow which for me is a synoym for "enjoying/loving each other" (poor man / Maria).
